There are two makes of Speedway Engine, GM and Jawa.
Speedway bikes use a 500cc single cylinder engine capable of reaching 0-60 in 3 seconds. No brakes. No gears. The Fuel is pure alcohol but not of the Stella variety!! The fuel is a methanol fuel and they do approx 5 miles per gallon! At 15 pounds per gallon this is not cheap!!
They have approximately 80+ bhp and these engines run upto 11,000+ revs. When they go bang they certainly go bang!.
The Magic Box Ignition System
Speedway engines run with a electronic ignition system commonly known in speedway as the Interspan "magic box", costing in the region of upto £500. It can be advanced and retarded in between each heat.
